DON CHEADLE ON “MOVIE TALK“…

In part of a 2021 interview with the YouTube channel Retrospective Show’s Movie Talk, acclaimed actor Don Cheadle sat down with journalist Peter Bart to discuss his roles in two iconic films, the 2004 film, Hotel Rwanda, and the 2001 film, Ocean’s Eleven.

The conversation began with Hotel Rwanda (2004), a film that held significant personal and professional importance for Cheadle. In the film directed by Terry GeorgeCheadle portrayed hotelier, Paul Rusesabagina, a real-life hero who saved countless lives during the Rwandan genocide by providing over a thousand refugees shelter in the besieged Hôtel des Mille Collines. The film co-starred Sophie Okonedo as Paul’s wifeTatiana RusesabaginaCheadle spoke passionately about the challenges and responsibilities of portraying such a complex and morally driven character. He delved into the extensive research he conducted to accurately depict Rusesabagina’s experiences and the emotional toll it took on him.

Cheadle also discussed the impact of Hotel Rwanda on raising awareness about the Rwandan genocide and the global response to it. He touched on the film’s critical acclaim and his Academy Award nomination for Best ActorOkonedo also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the screenplay for the film, co-written by director George and Keir Pearson was nominated for Best Original Screenplay

The conversation then shifted with Cheadle reflecting on his involvement in Ocean’s Eleven (2001), a star-studded heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film is a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same nameCheadle portrayed Basher Tarr, a British explosives expert with a penchant for colorful language and a fondness for causing controlled chaosCheadle shared anecdotes about working alongside Hollywood heavyweights like George ClooneyBrad Pitt, and Matt Damon. He discussed the camaraderie on set and the unique chemistry that made the film successful. Cheadle‘s portrayal of Basher Tarr added a memorable, witty dimension to the ensemble cast, contributing to the film’s charm.

Throughout the interviewDon Cheadle highlighted the stark contrast between the two films, from the heart-wrenching drama of Hotel Rwanda to the lighthearted caper of Ocean’s Eleven. He emphasized the versatility and depth required of an actor when tackling such diverse roles.
