The conversation began with Hotel Rwanda (2004), a film that held significant personal and professional importance for Cheadle. In the film directed by Terry George, Cheadle portrayed hotelier, Paul Rusesabagina, a real-life hero who saved countless lives during the Rwandan genocide by providing over a thousand refugees shelter in the besieged Hôtel des Mille Collines. The film co-starred Sophie Okonedo as Paul’s wife, Tatiana Rusesabagina. Cheadle spoke passionately about the challenges and responsibilities of portraying such a complex and morally driven character. He delved into the extensive research he conducted to accurately depict Rusesabagina’s experiences and the emotional toll it took on him.
