In the Spotlight: Ruffalo & Rezendes on New Film and Church Abuse…
The movie Spotlight shares the true story of reporters investigating the Catholic church sex abuse scandal. Their probe exposed more than 70 abusive priests and found the cover-up went all the way to the archbishop of Boston. Two-time Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo plays reporter Mike Rezendes, who won a Pulitzer Prize along with the Boston Globe “Spotlight” investigative team for their coverage. Both Ruffalo and Rezendes join CBS Mornings to discuss the film.
The interview starts out by introducing the movie with some background information on the Globe‘s Child sex abuse investigations of the Catholic Church, that inspired the film for director Tom McCarthy, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Singer. The film was on its Academy Award promotion tour, and would go on to win Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay at the 88th Academy Awards.
The CBS Morning team, that includes Gayle King, begin interviewing Ruffalo and asking him if it was true that he read the script, and signed on to do the film the next day. Ruffalo confirms it to be true and leads into why he choose to do the movie and the impact the groundbreaking investigation had on society and faith, and the message that could still resonate with a film adaption of that investigation.
King then asks Rezendes what it was like having Ruffalo shadow him, while learning about the reporter to portray him in the film. Rezendes elaborates on the experience, as well as what it was like to be apart of writing such an impactful investigation that turned into a Pulitzer Prize winning investigation. Gayle then discusses the film adaption of his investigation with Rezendes and Ruffalo and share in the impactful nature of Spotlight as the interview concludes.
