The 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday and the ongoing trend favorite has continued this award season in nominations with The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once leading the pack in numbers. The two films are tied at five nominations each. Shakespeare in Love in 1998, Chicago in 2002, and Doubt in 2008 all set the same records for their nominated voting year. They are both also nominated for the awards show’s biggest accolade for the best ensemble. Also nominated in the ensemble category are Damien Chazelle‘s take on old Hollywood, Babylon, the semi-autobiographical film by Steven Spielberg, The Fabelman’s, as well as Women Talking, directed by Sarah Polley that looks at sexual assault within a religious community. They will all be up against each other for the SAG Awards‘ top honors of the night.
The Golden Globes used to be the biggest barometer of who would earn a nomination and win an Academy Award, but in the last ten years the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has faced criticism over its voting body and suffered a public outing of misconduct and the revelation that they had no black voters in the HFPA, which resulted in an entertainment boycott of last years awards show, which did not not air LIVE on NBC in 2022. In the last five or so years, the SAG Awards have become the biggest indicator of who will be the frontrunner in the Oscar race, with the awards taking place the day before voting begins in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the coveted Academy Award nominations. Banshees is building itself a top spot among Oscar contenders fresh off a win for best motion picture, musical or comedy prize at the Golden Globe Awards Tuesday night. The entire Banshees cast of Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon earned SAG nominations this past week.
So if you are to believe past performances and patterns of the awards season comparison, it would serve that Everything Everywhere All At Once picking up supporting actress nominations for Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu from the SAG Awards on Wednesday, would further prove that one of both of them would likely see a supporting actor nomination from the Academy in the incoming weeks based on voting patterns. The multiverse reality film centered on an Asian American family, had already earned nominations and wins at the Golden Globes for, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan last week, almost solidifying without a doubt they will receive a nomination from the Academy for Best Actor and Actress when the Oscar nominations are announced if you also consider the old pattern of voting. And if we are to further believe those changed patterns of voting, one of them will get nominated and could possibly win in the best supporting actress race with the Academy.
Along with patterns and predictions comes the underdog factors so there were also a few snubs and surprises in the SAG nominations, one of the biggest was for The Fabelman’s lead actress Michelle Williams. Another surprising snub came for Rian Johnson‘s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the popular and anticipated murder mystery Netflix sequel, which wasn’t just snubbed it it was completely shutout from the nominations as well as Maria Schrader’s drama She Said, that had earned a Golden Globes nomination for Carey Mulligan, a drama about the journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story, and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, an incisive takedown of the billionaire elite that had also seen nominations from the Golden Globes the year.
As far as the SAG Television nominations that were announced on Wednesday, Netflix‘s final season of Ozark lead the nomination numbers with a total of four, which included an ensemble nomination for the cast, as well as acting nominations for its cast members Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner, who like with the Golden Globes nominations, also scored another nod for her work in the limited series Inventing Anna, for which she took home the Golden Globe this year. In the comedy arena, HBO’s Barry and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building are tied at three nominations apiece. The notable snubs from the TV nominations came for HBO’s House of the Dragon and Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which earned no nominations in the drama ensemble category.
The SAG Awards also no longer has their longstanding broadcasting contract on TBS and TNT. The show will air on Netflix’s YouTube channel this year and then move to Netflix in 2024. The ceremony will take place Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
