A Pink Nuclear Season…

The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced on January 10, 2024, and the ongoing film trend favorite “Barbenheimer” has continued this award season in nominations with Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the pack in numbers. They are both also nominated for the awards ceremony’s biggest accolade for the best ensemble. Also nominated in the ensemble category are American Fiction, the semi-biographical film by Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as The Color Purple, a film version of the Broadway musical adaptation. They will all be up against each other for the SAG Awards‘ top honors of the night.

Oppenheimer also received nominations in the categories of best actor for Cillian Murphy, supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. and supporting actress for Emily Blunt while Barbie was also nominated in the categories of best actress for Margot Robbie and supporting actor for Ryan Gosling. Killers of the Flower Moon and American Fiction earned three nominations apiece, including the best ensemble nod. Rounding out their three nods, Killers’ Lily Gladstone is nominated for best actress, while Robert De Niro is nominated for best supporting actor. Jeffrey Wright from the film American Fiction is nominated for best actor and Sterling K. Brown is nominated for best supporting actor. Other films that received two nominations include The Color Purple‘s other nomination for Danielle Brooks for best supporting actress, and Nyad, The Holdovers, Poor Things, and Maestro all received more than one acting nomination.

A Successful Bear Market Season…

On the television side of nominations, it’s no surprise that Succession led the nominations with five nods, including a nomination for best ensemble in a drama series. The series is in good company in the best ensemble category with fellow nominees being The Crown, The Gilded Age, The Last of Us, and The Morning Show. In the acting categories, Succession earned four with Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew McFayden all being nominated for best actor in a drama series, while Sarah Snook earned a nomination for best actress in a drama series.

Rounding out the television nominations, The Morning Show and The Last of Us are each up for two more awards along with best ensemble. In the comedy categories, Ted Lasso and The Bear each earned four nominations, that includes a nomination in the best comedy series ensemble for both series. The fellow comedy ensemble nominees are Abbott Elementary, Barry and Only Murders in the Building. In the limited series categories, Beef stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are both up for awards for their roles, with the show also landing a stunt ensemble performance nomination.

Presenter Issa Rae, who became a double SAG Awards nominee as part of the nominated ensembles of American Fiction and Barbie, and presenter Kumail Nanjiani announced this year’s nominees on Instagram Live on the SAG Awards and Netflix accounts. The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will air live on Netflix on Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET from L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium.
