NBC’S GOLDEN GLOW RETURNS…
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association‘s presentation of the 80th Golden Globe Awards returns on NBC this year, last year’s awards ceremony was not aired by the network in response to an entertainment industry boycott that was kicked off by a Los Angeles Times exposés in 2021 that revealed the Golden Globes organization, the HFPA, contained no black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.
GLOBE SOUL SEARCHING…
With the canceled ceremony and the release of the exposés, the HFPA announced sweeping reform within the organization, which included banning members from accepting gifts, and adding a hotline to report misconduct anonymously, the voting body was also reformed to add 103 internationally based voters and 21 new members. The new members consist of U.S.-based journalists working for outlets abroad. With the additional voters, the Golden Globes voting pool is now 52 percent female and 51.5 percent racially and ethically diverse.
A SHINY & NEW GOLD STANDARD…
The HFPA claims it is no longer the HFPA of the past and NBC is inclined to believe them and allow the 80th Golden Globes to air in January. Additionally, to the reform of the organization inward, the outward look of the presented ceremony has changed a bit in the nomination categories, with the HFPA breaking up its supporting actor and supporting actress honors into separate awards for ongoing TV series and a separate category for nominee honors in the limited/anthology series or TV movie. These categories in previous years had been combined. Films and TV released during the 2022 calendar year are eligible for awards.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON, BUT FOR HOW LONG?..
While the 2023 Golden Globes, hosted by Jarrod Carmichael, are set to air on NBC and Peacock from the Beverly Hills Hilton on Tuesday, January 10, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, this is the last year of the Golden Globes deal with NBC to air the awards ceremony on its network, and a future deal to renew has not been announced by the HFPA or NBC. It would seem that the future home of the ceremony is unclear. In previous years, the major networks would take turns having a multi-year deal with the HFPA to air the ceremony, it has not been announced that CBS, ABC, or FOX have been in contact with the organization to work out any future deal to air the Golden Globes live ceremony on their networks. With so many streaming services available now it could be possible for Amazon to offer a negotiation deal to air the Golden Globes on their Prime Video streaming service, it currently has negotiated deals to air live sports and live awards on its subscription-based service.
INTO THE UNKNOWN, FOLLOW THE GOLDEN GLOBE ROAD!..
The future of the Golden Globes is unknown but as for this year, the party is on a Tuesday night this year and different from its usual Sunday night tradition due to conflicts with New Year’s Day, the last day of the NFL’s regular season, and the Critics Choice Awards forced a move to a Tuesday. Even with the newly expanded categories of nominee honors, there were still a few disappointing snubs and some surprises when the nominations were announced on Monday, December 12, 2022. So without further ado, let’s get to this year’s nominees and break down all the snubs and surprises from the 2023 Nominations for the HFPA‘s presentation of the 80th Golden Globe Awards!

2023 GOLDEN GLOBES SNUBS & SURPRISES:
While The Golden Globes have moved in the past to nominate female directors after receiving criticism for an all-male nominated category for most of its existence, it failed, in 2023, to nominate any female directors in its announcement for The 80th Golden Globe Nominations. Possible female directors that were thought to be nominated for an award were, Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King and/or Sarah Polley for Women Talking, who were both in the running to be nominated. While it was no surprise that women were once again snubbed in the high-profile category of director, this is such old news in the world of snubs and surprises of the entertainment awards that one would think we had moved past it in the industry after so much open criticism of not just the HFPA, but film awards as a whole, often leave female directors off their lists of consideration. But here we are, talking about it again.
In no unexpected surprise, Brendan Fraser was nominated for his role in The Whale and revealed this summer on the festival circuit, that should he receive a Golden Globe nomination for his role, he would not attend the ceremony. This was due to Fraser revealing sexual assault by the former President of the HFPA in the past, where advances were made on Fraser that he was not accepting of nor receptive to and that the event traumatized him and he suffered from the experience. So should his nomination succeed in a win, Fraser will not be in attendance.
With Fraser‘s revelations and the Los Angeles Times exposé in February of 2021, Tom Cruise felt compelled to return to the three Golden Globe Awards he received so far in his career and did so publicly. That is why it would seem he was snubbed this year in the Best Actor category, only the HFPA didn’t want to nominate him for something he decided to give back not once, but three times. He was most likely left out of the consideration with Top Gun: Maverick and was, therefore, not surprised by the lack of nomination for his return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the most seen and record-setting box office blockbuster of last summer.
The one snub and surprise by most was Dominic West being left off the nomination announcements for his role as Prince Charles in the fifth season of The Crown on Netflix. Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, and Elizabeth Debicki all received nominations for their roles in the newest season. It almost seemed deliberate in that regard, like someone took his role personally and in offense to the now King of England and decided to leave him out entirely. It was the most noticeable, and unreasonable of snubs and surprises, that occurred on December 12, 2022, when the nominations were announced. He played the part of the now King well and it’s definitely one of West’s best roles in his career.
Nevertheless, the announcements have been made and the show must go on! And in that fashion, The 80th Golden Globes return to air once more on NBC on January 10, 2023. The water is still warming on the reception of the HFPA and the Golden Globes being back in town for awards season, but the HFPA has announced some changes to the setup at the Beverly Hilton, but there will still be champagne flowing at all tables but with a mellower party than of the past. We will have to wait to see what changes the HFPA has in store for the televised ceremony look like, but everyone will no doubt be walking a red carpet dressed in their best and hoping January 10 is their night!
