NBC’S GOLDEN GLOW RETURNED…

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association‘s presentation of the 80th Golden Globe Awards returned on NBC this year, with a high stakes comeback after a year in hiatus from airing LIVE on television due to an entertainment industry boycott that was kicked off by a Los Angeles Times exposés in 2021 that revealed the Golden Globes organization, the HFPA, contained no black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presents the 80th Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Jarrod Carmichael on NBC and Peacock on January 10th, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

AND THEN THE MIC DROPPED…

Host Jarrod Carmichael opened the awards ceremony by addressing the elephant in the room, which was last year’s hiatus due to the unethical conduct of the HFPA, which included not having any Black members, and joked that it was why he was hosting the awards for the evening, he then added he never cleared the jokes he was telling on stage at the HFPA‘s expense because they would have never approved them for the show. He then dug in further with the HFPA jokes, by appearing after a commercial break with three Golden Globes in hand claiming they were Tom Cruise‘s awards that he had given back to the HFPA during the entertainment industry boycott of the HFPA and Golden Globe Awards.

AND TO THE WINNERS WENT THE SPOILS…

The big winners of the night were The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin, who took home the top film awards at the Golden Globe Awards, while on the TV side, Abbott Elementary and The White Lotus continued and very much enjoyed their winning streak in the TV category of Golden Globe Awards. The Fabelmans won Best Motion Picture – Drama, with Steven Spielberg also scooping up the Golden Globe Award for Best Director. The Banshees of Inisherin won Best Motion Picture – Comedy, while also winning the Golden Globe Awards for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture which was awarded to Martin McDonagh, and Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy which was awarded to Colin Farrell. While on the TV side of things, Abbott Elementary won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and included a win for Quinta Brunson for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy among the many awards the ABC series went home with that night. The White Lotus dominated with Jennifer Coolidge and Mike White winning Golden Globe Awards for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film and Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film among the many awards the HBO series took home for the evening.

CECIL B. DEMILLE AWARD RECIPIENT:

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” and the honorary recipient for the 80th Golden Globe Awards was Eddie Murphy. He thanked the HFPA for the honor while letting the audience know the three things he learned from his long career in Hollywood and ended that speech with the third thing being a joke referencing the ‘slap heard around the world’ at the Oscars in 2022 between Will Smith and Chris Rock. Chris Rock is a friend of Murphy‘s and Eddie mentored him after seeing him in a comedy show in the 80s and helped him get cast in his film debut in 1987‘s Beverly Hills Cop II.

CAROL BURNETT AWARD RECIPIENT:

The Carol Burnett Award is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen” and the honorary recipient of The 80th Golden Globe Awards was Ryan Murphy. Murphy thanked the HFPA for the honor and referenced the honorary awards namesake, Carol Burnett, and the inspiration she was to his career in television. He also thanked the actors, actresses, producers and crew that have been along with him in his career and contribution to television on and off the screen.
