On September 3, 2019, Sacha Baron Cohen sat down with Cinema Magazine to discuss his role in the new Netflix limited series, The Spy. Baron Cohen portrays the real life Mossad Spy Eli Cohen, who infiltrated the highest echelons of Syrian government and society while undercover as a spy for Israel and assumed a new identity as a Syrian businessman to do it, the series chronicles the story that takes place during the years leading to the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and Syria. In the interview Cohen discussed looking at archival footage of Eli Cohen for research for the series, as well as what it was like to take a role that was such a departure from the comedy that he is known for. He discusses why he chose this role for that departure, and what Eli Cohen meant to the national security of Israel as well as the impact of Cohen’s mission on history.
