Roy Halston Frowick, known simply as Halston, was an American designer of elegant fashions with a streamlined look. His fame rose when he designed the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to the inauguration of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in 1961. He rose to international fame in the 1970s and would define the 70s era in American fashion, making him widely considered the first superstar designer in the United States. Halston’s simple yet chic minimalist designs, which were often made of cashmere or ultrasuede, were a new phenomenon in the mid-1970s discos, and they redefined American fashion. Halston was known for creating a relaxed urban lifestyle for American women. His designs included Ultrasuede shirtwaist dresses, tailored suits, traditional chiffon and crepe evening dresses, cashmere sweater sets, tunics, slinky halter dresses, and knitted cape-stoles. His later creations were limited to costumes for Martha Graham’s dance company.

Halston was frequently photographed at Studio 54 with his close friends Liza MinnelliBianca JaggerJoe Eula, and Andy Warhol.

In 1973 Halston sold his business to the Norton Simon conglomerate for $16 million but continued as principal designer. In 1982, Halston signed a contract to design an affordable clothing line for the mass retailer J.C. Penney. It was unprecedented at the time and severely damaged his career, although such deals subsequently became common in the fashion industry later. In 1984 he was fired from his namesake business, and, beginning that year, he tried unsuccessfully to buy back the company. Halston eventually lost control of his fashion house.

In 1990 Halston moved to San Francisco, and later that year he died from AIDS-related complications.
