The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced their nominations for the 2022 film year with a live streaming announcement held this morning and hosted by Academy Award winner Riz Ahmed and M3GAN‘s Allison Williams. Everything Everywhere All At Once lead the nominations with 11 Oscars including one of Best Picture, and solidified the film as the one to beat this awards season. Among the other nominees for Best Picture was Top Gun: Maverick which brought people back to theaters studios were worried the pandemic shutdown might hinder anyone coming back during a time when studios are seeing fewer filmgoers heading to the theaters and preferring to stream films front their home. Also in the running is another big blockbuster favorite at the theaters, James Cameron‘s long- anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water which more than stays above water at the box office and beat the records set by the Tom Cruise sequel this past June.

The A24 frontrunner film directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert also saw nominations unsurprisingly for its main cast, Michelle Yeoh, and Ke Huy Quan, who will compete in the Best Actress and Supporting Actor categories, both actors have all earned and took home the awards at the Golden Globes, and SAG Awards this year, the only surprise would be if Cate Blanchett, who is also nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in the Todd Field film, Tár, takes home the Oscar instead of Yeoh. Co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu will be competing against each other for Supporting Actress for their roles in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Kwan and Scheinert also received nominations for Original Screenplay and Director at this years nominations announcement. And among the other films that saw the entire cast receive nominations, The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan were all nominated this morning, while sadly Jenny the Donkey was snubbed. And nomination favorites Angela Bassett, Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser also received nominations for their films, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Elvis and The Whale.

This years race is unpredictable and will definitely be a nail bitter as there is no direct line to predicting the winner this year, the winners have been nominated across the board this year and some have lost and some have won without there being a clean sweep by any one actor in a category. So it will be interesting to see who takes home the golden Oscar this year, so we will all have to tune in on March 12, 2023 on ABC when Jimmy Kimmel returns for the third time to host the awards ceremony, and see who is taking home an Oscar! Until then we will have to make our predictions on our ballots and hope for the best!
