The series is another origin story in the Yellowstone universe, so it follows the next generation of the Dutton family in 1923, decades after the patriarch, James Dutton (portrayed by Tim McGraw) founded the land in Montana at the end of 1883. 1923, follows his brother, Jacob Dutton, portrayed by Harrison Ford, and the Dutton family during a time of various hardships, including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression, which affected Montana long before the 1929 Stock Market Crash.

The Paramount+ series stars Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, and Darren Mann as Jack Dutton. They all represent the earlier generation of Dutton’s that lived on the Dutton Ranch long before John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner, protected it on Yellowstone.
