Hollywood.com John Q Interview…

Back in 2002, while on their promotion tour for the film John Q., stars Denzel Washington, Anne Heche, Kimberly Elise, and director Nick Cassavetes sat down with Rachael Fedder of Hollywood.com for interviews to discuss their new film. Washington stars as John Quincy Archibald, a father who is forced to take a hospital emergency room hostage in order for his son to receive a heart transplant. Robert DuvallJames Woods, and Ray Liotta appear in supporting roles.

Denzel Washington discusses how he read the script and was brought to tears over the storyline of this father brought who’s desperation for his son to receive a heart transplant leads to a drastic outcome out of what he felt was necessity after being refused coverage financially by both his insurance carrier, and the hospital caring for his son. Kimberly Elise, who plays Denise Archibald, John’s wife discusses the heartbreaking situation that the couple is put through in the film. Anne Heche who plays hospital administrator Rebecca Payne discusses that while painful the magnitude of the story was beautiful. Director Nick Cassavetes discusses how he wanted to bring awareness to how bad the healthcare system really is through the eyes of these characters, and made it clear that he wasn’t trying to tell anyone how to fix the system, he was simply taking a very real situation that occurs for families, and bring light to the issue of affordable healthcare. Washington goes further and discusses that Cassavetes was inspired by his own experience with his daughter and multiple surgeries that she had to have, and that his own experience navigating the healthcare system inspired the story of John Q.
