True crime has never been more popular — or more polarizing. From streaming docuseries to Oscar contenders, the genre dominates contemporary storytelling. But the explosion of dramatizations based on real violence raises a question too few ask: what happens when entertainment is built from someone else’s trauma? When Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood (1966), he didn’t just invent a new literary form — he created the template for how artists might wrestle with morality in retelling real horror. Half a century later, the ethics of that template have blurred.
