The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) held the Oscars ceremony for the 2023 film year with a live-streaming announcement held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and it was the 96th year for the Academy Awards, now simply titled, “Oscars” in honor the gold men awarded to the winners in every film category. To no one’s surprise, Oppenheimer was the film to beat and swept most of the major categories, the Universal Pictures frontrunner film directed by Christopher Nolan won Best Picture and Director. The films star, Cillian Murphy, also won the Oscar for Best Actor, for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy simultaneously became the first Irish actor to win the award. Murphy‘s co-star in the film, Robert Downey Jr. also won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, for his role as Lewis Strauss.
While Oppenheimer took home seven Oscars, the film Poor Things, the second most nominated film of the night, took home four Oscars, including the film’s star, Emma Stone, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in the Searchlight Pictures film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie, becoming the youngest two-time Oscar winners in history (22 and 26 years, respectively), having previously won the award in 2022. Killers of the Flower Moon became Scorsese‘s third film to be nominated in ten or more categories and not win a single award, after Gangs of New York and The Irishman. The Zone of Interest became the first British film to win the International Feature category. Godzilla Minus One became the first Japanese film to win the Best Visual Effects category. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers.
