The Order (2024) is a tense and unflinching crime thriller directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Zach Baylin, adapted from The Silent Brotherhood: Inside America’s Racist Underground (1989), the landmark nonfiction book by journalists Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt. The film immerses viewers in the violent underbelly of 1980s America, where a covert white supremacist network — calling itself “The Order” — waged war against the federal government through robberies, bombings, and assassinations in pursuit of a racist, separatist vision.

Jude Law stars as Terry Husk, a fictionalized FBI agent whose obsessive pursuit of domestic extremism drives the film’s investigation, while Nicholas Hoult delivers a chilling performance as Robert Jay Mathews, the real-life founder and leader of The Order. Supporting performances from Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron add moral and emotional texture to a story steeped in paranoia, violence, and ideology.

Premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2024 — where it competed for the Golden Lion — The Order drew immediate attention for its stark realism, measured tone, and Kurzel’s characteristic visual precision. Following its limited U.S. theatrical release on December 6, 2024, and subsequent global debut on Amazon Prime Video, the film earned generally positive critical reception, praised for its haunting performances, historical accuracy, and its timely exploration of how extremist movements take root within America’s social and political fabric.

The real-life case that inspired The Order traces back to a violent white supremacist organization formally known as the Silent Brotherhood, active in the United States during the early to mid-1980s. Led by Robert Jay Mathews, the group sought to ignite a “racial revolution” by declaring war on the federal government — whom they viewed as controlled by Jewish interests — and financing their cause through a series of armed robberies, counterfeiting operations, and high-profile crimes, including the 1984 assassination of Jewish talk radio host Alan Berg in Denver.

The FBI’s pursuit of The Order became one of the most significant domestic terrorism investigations in American history, culminating in a deadly standoff on Whidbey Island, Washington, where Mathews was killed after a 35-hour siege. Central to the real investigation was FBI Special Agent Wayne Manis, the primary field agent who spent years tracking The Order’s movements across multiple states. Manis — whose relentless commitment and moral complexity inspired Jude Law’s character Terry Husk — became a key figure in dismantling the organization, uncovering the deep network of neo-Nazi and far-right groups that had quietly spread throughout the Pacific Northwest. His meticulous investigation not only brought down the Silent Brotherhood but also laid the groundwork for how the FBI would later approach homegrown extremism in the decades to come.
